The hole diameter needs to be exactly the anchor diameter - no tolerances. A 1/2″ anchor will need a 1/2″ carbide-tipped masonry bit in a hammer drill. It is impossible to drill a clean hole for wedge anchors with a standard rotary drill.
Use a drill that exceeds the required embedment depth to accommodate any dust that might settle at the bottom of the hole. We recommend drilling at least 1/2″ deeper than the anchor penetrates the concrete. Clean the holes thoroughly. Use a wire brush to loosen any debris, then blast with compressed air to blow the debris out or vacuum out all the dust. Dust left in the hole prevents the expansion clip from seating properly against the concrete, which seriously compromises holding values. This step gets skipped on job sites more often than it should—and it is usually why anchors fail.
The minimum embedment is the depth at which the anchor must be embedded in the concrete to develop its rated holding values.
That is 2″ for a 1/2″ anchor. For a 3/4", it is 3″.
Here’s the simple formula to calculate the total anchor length: Fixture thickness + Minimum embedment + Thickness of ball nut and washer.
The nut and washer usually add about the same thickness as the anchor diameter.
For a 1/2” anchor through a 1/2” steel base plate: 1/2” (plate) + 2” (embedment) + 1/2” (nut/washer) = 3” minimum anchor length.
There is no harm in using a longer anchor, it just gives you more usable thread up above the concrete for any future adjustments.
