Sinsun Sleeve Anchors: The Versatile Expansion Anchor You Have Been Looking For

Drill a hole , hammer the anchor in , and tighten the nut . That should be it. But if the anchor spins, the sleeves mushroom or it all pulls out under load, you waste time and compromise safety. Sleeve anchors overcome these issues by expanding over the whole length of their full collar, not just at one point. This makes them one of the most versatile and forgiving expansion anchors on the market.

In the trade, sleeve anchors are known by many names: dynabolt sleeve anchors, expanding sleeve anchors, masonry sleeve anchors, sleeve expansion anchors, sleeve bolts and nuts, metal sleeve anchors, anchor bolt sleeves, sleeve anchor wall plugs, or just sleeve bolts. Whatever you call them they all work the same way - a threaded bolt, a split steel sleeve and a tapered cone at the base that come together to grip the base material from within.

Sleeve anchors are the only expansion anchors that work reliably on all base materials, including concrete, brick, block, and hollow masonry. This causes the block to crack at the point of expansion. This is why wedge anchors fail in blocks. Sleeve anchors spread pressure over the length of the sleeves, giving you consistent holding power in many more applications.

Sinsun has manufactured fasteners since 2006. We don’t just buy blanks and package them, we control everything from raw steel to the final coating. The result is an anchor that expands cleanly, sits consistently, and holds up to spec. No assumptions. No spinouts. We provide reliable anchoring for bricks, blocks, concrete, and more.

From the Factory Floor: Why Installers Trust Sinsun Sleeve Anchors

true
Sleeve anchors are known to be the most forgiving expansion anchor on the job site. If you drill a hole a little oversized or you find a void in a hollow block a wedge anchor will spin uselessly. There is no problem with a sleeve anchor. Sleeve anchors are the first choice for contractors who work with multiple base materials on a daily basis because of their forgiveness.
We manufacture sleeve anchors in diameters from 1/4″ to 3/4″ (6mm to 20mm) and lengths from 1″ to 8″ (25mm to 200mm). Each anchor comes with the correct nut and washer pre-assembled, no missing parts and no last minute runs to the hardware store.
We also offer multiple head styles and corrosion resistant finishes to match your project requirements, from dry interior installations to marine grade applications. If the hole you drill is a bit too big, or you encounter a void in a hollow block, a wedge anchor will simply become useless. Sleeve anchor still good. It is this forgiving nature that makes sleeve anchors the go-to choice for contractors working with a variety of base materials on a daily basis.

Sleeve Anchor Classifications You Need to Know

Based on market demand and common contractor inquiries, sleeve anchors sort into the following key categories. Each serves a specific application and environment.

  • Wood Shingle Nails

Stainless Steel Sleeve Anchors (304 & 316 Grades)

Stainless steel sleeve anchors are appropriate for wet conditions, coastal installations and food processing facilities. 304 stainless steel is suitable for normal outdoor use and humid indoor spaces. 316 stainless steel contains molybdenum, which resists saltwater, chlorides and chemical exposure. This makes it the standard for marine docks, swimming pool equipment and wastewater treatment plants. In spite of years of exposure, the metal sleeves expand cleanly without galling. Compared with carbon steel, it is more expensive up-front, but the corrosion protection is unsurpassed in critical applications.

  • Wood Shingle Nails

    Hex Head Sleeve Anchor

The hex head sleeve anchor is the workhorse of this class. A typical hex nut is threaded onto a bolt. As the nut is tightened, it pulls the cone into the split sleeve, expanding the sleeve outward against the hole wall. The hex head allows high torque transfer with standard wrenches. The exposed nut means that you can always remove the fixture later if you need to, simply by backing off the nut. You see these everywhere, attaching safety railings to concrete, anchoring warehouse racking to floors, or mounting equipment pads to industrial slabs. The hex head sleeve anchor is a versatile item that we always have in stock in common diameters and lengths.

  • Wood Shingle Nails

Countersunk Sleeve Anchor / Flat Head Sleeve Anchor

If a flush fit is required with the surface then a flat head or countersunk sleeve anchor is the answer. The anchors have a recessed flat head that, when installed, is flush with the base material. There is no protruding hardware that could create a tripping hazard or interfere with moving equipment. For instance, these clamps are often used to secure stair treads, mount access panels, and attach machinery feet where a low profile is desirable. There is an additional step required to countersink a flat head, but the clean look and flush finish are worth it.

    Eye Bolt Sleeve Anchor

If you need an anchor point for cables, chains, ropes or tie downs, an eyebolt sleeve anchor replaces the usual hex nut with a closed loop or open hook. Similarly, the expansion mechanism involves tightening the fixture to squeeze the cone into the sleeve. However, the eye offers a solid attachment point for overhead lifting points, fall protection anchorages, cable tray supports and tensioned guy wires. You'll find these in industrial maintenance areas, on construction sites for temporary tie-offs and in marine applications for mooring hardware. If you are using eye bolt sleeve anchors for overhead lifting or life-safety applications, you should always check the load ratings on the anchors.

Sleeve Anchors for Specific Applications

Sleeve Anchors for Concrete

Sleeve anchors first got their reputation in concrete. In solid concrete, tightening the nut causes the split sleeve to expand outward against the hole wall, creating friction-based holding power that is resistant to both tension and shear loads. The full-length expansion distributes pressure more evenly than a wedge anchor that applies force at one point. This even spread ensures consistent performance even if your drilling hole is slightly oversized or your hammer drill drifts off-center. When specified with proper embedment, sleeve anchors meet ACI 355.2 requirements for cracked and uncracked concrete. For structural applications specify a sleeve anchor with independent certification (ICC-ES or ETA) and follow the manufacturer's spacing and edge distance guidelines—minimum 10 diameters between anchors and 5 diameters from any unsupported edge.

Sleeve Anchors for Brick

Brick needs a lighter touch than concrete. The material is softer, more porous, and more likely to crack if you over expand a wedge anchor. As the sleeve expands over its length, it concentrates force rather than concentrating it at one point.Drill into the brick itself, not the mortar joint. Mortar has very small holding strength and crumbles under load.It is important to thoroughly clean the hole before installation.Choose an anchor length that provides a minimum of 1 inch (25mm) of embedment past the fixture thickness. For older or softer bricks, we recommend stainless steel sleeves to prevent galvanic corrosion and minimize expansion pressure. Properly installed sleeve anchors in solid brick will hold handrails, signage, equipment brackets and storm shutters for decades.

Sleeve Anchors for Hollow Block

Hollow concrete block (or cinder block or CMU) is the most challenging base material for expansion anchors. Wedge anchors crack the block face by expanding at one point and overstressing the material. In order to solve this problem, sleeve anchors collapse into the void cavity, creating a locking effect that spreads the pressure over a large area. It is critical that the anchor is short enough so that the entire sleeve expands within the solid face shell of the block without extending into the hollow interior. Our team suggested that the maximum anchor length for standard 8″ blocks tested in practice was approximately 2-1/2 inches. We also recommend the use of oversized washers to distribute the clamping load across the block face. For heavy loads in hollow blocks, structural anchors may be the better choice.

Sleeve Anchor for TV Mount

When mounting a television to a masonry wall, you need fasteners you can trust. Flat-screen TVs today weigh between 15 and 50 kilograms and with the addition of an articulated mount, the leverage on the top anchors increases. Plastic wall plugs will not work. Most TV mounting applications will be covered with M8 sleeve anchors in 50-75mm lengths. M10 will be specified for heavier displays than 40 kilograms. The sleeve expands towards the hole wall, giving a firm grip without overstressing concrete or brick. If installing into stud walls and not masonry use toggle bolts or purpose-designed drywall anchors. Sleeve anchors are the masonry fasteners with the holding power you need with a clean finished appearance.

sleeve anchor bolts of Installation & Selection Guide

Choose the correct anchor length:

  • The formula is straightforward: Anchor length ≥ Fixture thickness + Minimum embedment depth Minimum embedment for 3/8" anchor is 1-1/2". For a 1/2" thick fixture, you will need at least a 2" anchor. Making it with a longer anchor won’t hurt, it just gives you more thread exposed above the fixture. If your anchor is too short you will not get rated holding values. If in doubt, take more time.

Choosing the Right Diameter:

  • Diameter is determined by load requirements. For light duty applications (picture frames, small shelves) a 1/4″ sleeve anchor will do. For medium-duty applications (handrails, equipment mounting) use 3/8" or 5/16" screws. Use 1/2" to 3/4" anchors for heavy structural loads such as steel columns and seismic bracing. If you do not know, ask a structural engineer with your load requirements and base material conditions.

Installation Steps:

  • 1.Drill the hole at right angles to the work surface with the same size carbide-tipped masonry bit.

  • 2.Drill at least 1/2″ deeper than the anchor length to allow for any dust that settles at the bottom.

  • 3.Blow the hole clean with compressed air and a nylon bristle brush. Dust prevents expansion and reduces holding values.

  • 4.Push the anchor through the fixture and into the hole. If necessary tap gently into place with a hammer. * Do not deform the sleeves.

  • 5.Use a wrench to tighten the nuts. Tighten 3–5 turns past finger-tight until the washer contacts the fixture surface. Do not use an impact wrench, as the concussive force can damage the sleeve.

Sleeve Anchor Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)

Q: What do sleeve anchors call construction workers?

A:  Sleeve anchors are known by many names: dynabolt sleeve anchor, expanding sleeve anchor, masonry sleeve anchor, anchor bolt sleeve, sleeve expansion anchor, sleeve bolt, metal sleeve anchor, sleeve anchor wall plug and dynabolt anchor.

Q: What's the difference between an anchor sleeve and a wedge anchor?

A: The sleeve anchor expands the entire length of the sleeve against the wall of the hole. A wedge anchor expands at one point near the base (a tapered cone is pulled up into an expansion clip). Wedge anchors are for solid concrete only. Sleeve anchors work in concrete, brick and block walls.

Q: Can I use sleeve anchors in hollow block?

A: Yes. Sleeve anchors are specifically designed for hollow block. When tight, the sleeve creates a cavity inside that locks against it. The anchor must be short enough so that the sleeve expands within the solid face shell, not into the void.

Q: What size drill bit do I use for sleeve anchor?

A: The drill bit must have a diameter that is exactly the same as the diameter of the anchor. For a 3/8″ anchor use a 3/8″ bit. If you use a bigger drill bit the sleeve will not expand enough to hold the hole wall . If you use a smaller bit the anchor will not go in .

Q: Why is my sleeve anchor not fitting into the drilled hole?

A: Either you used the wrong diameter drill bit or you did not clean the hole properly. Dust and debris tend to accumulate at the bottom of the hole, decreasing effective depth. Drill 1/2″ deeper than anchor length and blow out hole with compressed air before installing.

Q: Can sleeve anchors be removed after installation?

A: Sleeve anchors are permanent. They are difficult to remove and usually require cutting the bolt flush and patching the hole. For applications that require future disassembly, specify hex head sleeve anchors where you can back off the nut and remove the fixture leaving the sleeve embedded in the base material.

Q: What’s the difference between zinc plated sleeve anchors and stainless steel sleeve anchors?

A: Zinc plated (electro-galvanized) sleeve anchors are a cost effective fastener for indoor, dry environments. They rust in damp or humid conditions. 304 Stainless Steel is corrosion resistant in typical outdoor and wet applications. 316 stainless steel has molybdenum for best saltwater and chemical resistance. Select your coating based on service environment.

Q: What is a hex sleeve anchor?

A: A hex sleeve anchor has a regular hex nut that you tighten with a wrench to expand the sleeve. The exposed nut allows the fixture to be removed later and the hex head can take very high torque values without stripping . This is the most common style of sleeve anchor.

Q: How deep do you set sleeve anchors in concrete?

A: Minimum embedment is a function of anchor diameter: 1/4″ requires 1″, 3/8" 1 1/2" , 1/2" 2" " The deeper you go, the more it grab. But do not go beyond the maximum embedment specified by the manufacturer.

Q: Do you carry ETA approved sleeve anchors for European projects?

A: Yes. For the European market, we offer sleeve anchors with CE and ETA certification. "The certifications are required for structural applications and seismic bracing systems in EU member countries. Please contact us regarding your specific project needs.

Q: Can I get sample packs before I place a bulk sleeve anchor order?

A: For sure. We ship sample boxes of sleeve anchors in the diameters, lengths and finishes that you call for. Test them in your brick, block or concrete. Take them through your installation process, confirm the expansion and inspect the torque values. The only way to buy fasteners with confidence is quality verification.

Q: Are there any sleeve anchors that are AS 5216 approved in Australia?

A: Yes. We produce sleeve anchors which are AS 5216 certified for the Australian construction industry. This certification is required for any project that needs to meet Australian building codes. Tell our team your project location and we will provide the correct documentation.
