A Practical Guide to Installing Sinsun Roofing Nails

    Matching materials and tools

First, choose nails that work with both your nail gun and the roofing material. Standard roofing nails for asphalt shingles are 1.5 inches long. For thicker underlayment or securing trusses, 2-inch nails are better. Use Sinsun precision coil nails or strip nails in your roofing nail gun to keep the nails from getting stuck. One of the main reasons tiles get blown off by the wind is using nails that are too small or don't match.

Where to put the nails and how to put them in

Put the nails in at an angle to the roofing sheet. The right place to nail is inside the nailing groove that the manufacturer shows on the shingle. Never nail above or below the nailing groove. The nail head should be about 1–2 inches above the sealant line for most shingles. Sinsun's ring nails have a great grip, but they only work well if they are installed correctly.

The right depth for the nail

The nail head should be level with the tile surface, not too deep or sticking out. If you drive your nails too deep, they can tear the tile layers, making them less wind-resistant. Nails that stick out can get caught on the next tile, making it harder to seal. To make sure the nail is flush with the tile surface, set the air pressure on your Sinsun roofing nail gun to between 70 and 120 PSI.

    Amount and spacing

Follow the tile maker's instructions for how many nails to use; usually, 4 to 6 nails are used for each tile. Six nails are best for places with a lot of wind. Spread the nails out evenly over the tiles to make sure they stay in place. Using reliable Sinsun nails for a consistent nailing method makes sure that the roof works the same way all the time.

Final check: After putting in a section, carefully lift the edge of the tile to make sure the adhesive strip is holding it in place. Along with properly installed Sinsun nails, this makes a complete, sealed, weatherproof layer of protection.

    FAQASK US
    ANYTHING

Q: What is the purpose of sealing roof nails, and how do you do it?

    +

A: The goal is to keep water from getting through the nail hole and into the roof deck. You can do this with nails that have a sealant built into the shank or, more often, with nails that have a rubber or plastic washer on them. The washer pushes against the roofing material to make a watertight gasket, which is an important part of Sinsun's sealed nail systems.

Q: What are sheathing nails? Can I use roofing nails to put up roof sheathing?

    +
A: Sheathing nails are made just for holding the plywood or OSB panels (the sheathing) to the roof trusses. We recommend using Sinsun's special roof sheathing nails, which are similar but have a smooth shank and a ring or spiral shank to make it harder to pull them out and keep the deck solid and quiet.

Q:How many roofing nails do you usually need for each square?

    +
A: "square" in roofing is 100 square feet. You usually need about 320 nails per square for standard 3-tab asphalt shingles (4 nails per shingle). It can be closer to 480 nails per square for architectural shingles (6 nails per shingle). Always check the manufacturer's specifications for the shingles. Using high-quality Sinsun nails will make sure you don't lose count because of jams or misfeeds.

Q: What kind of nails are best for a roof made of tiles?

    +
A: Special fasteners are needed for tile roofs. To match the long life of the tiles, sinsun tile roof nails are usually made of a metal that doesn't rust, like copper or stainless steel. They usually have a big, flat head that keeps the tile battens or tiles from breaking when they are held in place.

Q: When should I use nails with rubber washers?

    +
A: If you're worried about water getting into the fastener point, you should use Sinsun rubber washer nails to hold things together. They are necessary for attaching insulation boards, securing roof underlayment, and putting metal roofing panels on. The bonded washer makes a seal that lasts longer and works better than a simple coating.

Q: Do galvanized coil nails not rust?

    +
A: Sinsun galvanized coil nails are very resistant to rust, but they are not completely rust-proof. The coating determines how much protection there is. Our electro-galvanized nails are good for regular shingle jobs. Our hot-dipped galvanized (G90) nails have a much thicker zinc coating that lasts longer in harsher climates, stops rust stains, and stops nails from breaking too soon.

Q: What do people use smooth shank roofing nails for?

    +
A: People mostly use sinsun smooth shank roofing nails for temporary holds or jobs that don't put a lot of stress on the nails from wind, like some kinds of underlayment. But for permanent installation of asphalt shingles, we highly recommend our ring shank nails because they are up to 40% more resistant to being pulled out, which is important for the roof's long life.

Q: Are the same nails okay to use for both the underlayment and the final shingles?

    +
A: It's possible, but it's not always the best thing to do. You can use Sinsun plastic cap nails or rubber washer nails to hold the underlayment (roof felt) in place and make it a sealed layer. Use special ring shank shingle nails to attach the last shingles. This will make them as wind-resistant as possible. Using the right nail for each job makes sure that your roofing system is complete and works well.
