Molly Anchors

You drill into the drywall, cram a plastic plug in there, turn the screw and… nothing holds. The weight of a shelf or a mirror pulls the whole thing out of the wall. Drywall, also known as gypsum board, plasterboard or sheetrock, has no grip on a standard screw by itself which is why this is. Make sure the fastener latches behind the wall and not into it. That is where a molly anchor (also known as a molly bolt, hollow-wall anchor, wall grip anchor or expansion sleeve) is employed. “Molly” was once a trademark name but today it’s the generic name for this type of metal sleeve anchor which expands as you tighten the screw to form a wide clamping base on the backside of the drywall.

We are Sinsun, a 20 year old factory based in Tianjin, manufacturing fasteners for professionals in Europe, Canada, Australia and more. We don't purchase from middlemen and stick a logo on it. We produce our own molly bolts in carbon steel, 304 stainless steel with zinc plating or yellow zinc finishing. On each batch, real world testing is done: sharp barbs on the flange to prevent the anchor from spinning, a machine screw that drives in easily, and an expansion sleeve that does not crack during installation. The end product is a Molly anchor you can trust for years to come. What sets us apart? There are no retail layers, no inflated prices, just honest fasteners that work. And if you need a concrete molly anchor for masonry, or a plastic molly bolt for light duty, we have those too. One stop for all molly bolts you need.

Where to Use Sinsun Molly Anchor Key Applications

Commercial framing and drywall track

1. Wall‑Mounted Cabinets

Kitchen cabinets are heavy. Dishes, canned goods, pots and pans. Standard drywall screws pull out in weeks. Alternatively, try our metal molly anchors. More than 50 pounds of holding power is on each anchor. Put four of them in one cabinet and that cabinet won't budge for years of daily use. The best bit? Our molly bolts have sharp barbs that dig into the drywall surface so the anchor won’t spin as you tighten the screw. There was no cracked plaster, no wobbly shelves.

2. TV Mounts – No Stud? No Problem

Hanging a flat screen TV is stressful enough without searching for wall studs. A 55-inch television weighs between 40 and 50 pounds. Two or three Sinsun molly anchors will easily handle that load, spreading the force across a wide area behind the drywall. And because the screw can be removed without damaging the anchor, you can take down the TV for repairs. You can also put it back up in the same place later. That’s not a feature plastic anchors can provide.

3.Heavy Shelves for Books & Storage

You begin with a couple of books, then a few more, then perhaps one or two plants. The anchor slowly weakens, the shelf tips, and you fill holes. Sinsun’s metal molly bolts expand fully, gripping the back of the drywall like a vise as you tighten the screw. For deeper shelves or garage storage, select our larger M6 size. They provide that kind of grip that allows you to load up without worrying about midnight crashes.

4. Mirrors & Large Picture Frames

Big mirrors are difficult. They're heavy, fragile, and are often hung on walls without studs. The weight is borne by a single molly anchor, and the expandable sleeves provide a secure base to prevent the screw from pulling out over time. We see professionals using our molly bolts for hotel lobby mirrors and gallery installations.” For home use, three or four anchors will be enough for any mirror you can lift.

5.Radiators & Towel Warmers (UK & Europe)

Central heating radiators and towel warmers are surprisingly heavy, with some units weighing 50-70 pounds. Plus they wiggle a bit when they get hot and cool, which loosen cheap plastic anchors. This is where a molly bolt anchor comes in handy, the metal sleeve is locked behind the drywall. "Sinsun molly bolts are used by many contractors in the UK and Germany specifically for this application.

6. Bathroom Fixtures

Bathrooms are wet, plastic anchors break. The zinc-plated metal molly bolts used by Sinsun won't rust, and they'll hold the towel bars securely even if guests tug on them repeatedly. The installation is straightforward: Drill the hole, insert anchor, tighten screws, done. No cracked tiles, no spinning anchors, no unhappy calls.

Installation Guide – Do It Right the First Time
Installing a molly anchor is straightforward, but a few details matter:

STEP 01 Drill The Pilot Hole.

Use the correct bit size (check our spec table). The hole should be just large enough for the sleeve to pass through snugly. Too tight, and the sleeve jams. Too wide, and the anchor loses grip.

STEP 02 Identify your surface.

Push the molly anchor into the hole until the flange is flush with the wall surface. The sharp barbs on our anchors bite into the drywall and prevent spinning.

STEP 03 Tighten the screw.

Turn the machine screw clockwise. You will feel resistance as the sleeve begins to expand behind the wall. Keep turning until the screw is snug. Do not overtighten — you just need the anchor to grip firmly.

STEP 04 Back the screw out slightly.

This optional step loosens the screw just enough to mount your bracket or fixture without losing the anchor’s expansion.

STEP 05 Mount your item and tighten .

Place your shelf bracket, TV mount, or cabinet over the exposed screw threads, then tighten the screw fully.

STEP 06 Test before loading.

Give the mounted item a gentle tug. If it feels solid, you are done. If it moves, check that the anchor expanded properly and the screw is tight.

OUR Selection Guide – Which Sinsun Molly Anchor Do You Actually Need?

Ask yourself three questions:

What is the wall made of?

Drywall → regular hollow-wall molly. Concrete, brick or block → concrete molly anchor Plasterboard over hollow cavity → advisable to use a metal metal anchor?

move or reposition the item?

If it is, use a metal metal anchor. The screw can be removed and reinstalled without any damage to the anchor – something plastic anchors can’t do.

What Customers Are Saying

– Real Feedback from Key Markets

Based on market research, Europe accounts for roughly 30% of the global molly anchor demand, with Germany, the UK, and France leading in DIY and professional usage. Canada and Australia also show strong growth, particularly in home renovation projects where drywall construction is common. Here is what real buyers told us.

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)

Q: What is a molly bolt anchor?
A: A molly bolt anchor (also called a hollow‑wall anchor) is a metal sleeve with a machine screw inside. When you tighten the screw, the sleeve expands behind the drywall, creating a wide clamping base that holds heavy items securely.
Q: Are molly bolts reusable after installation?
A: A standard 1/8″ molly anchor in 1/2″ drywall will hold about 50 pounds (22 kg). Larger sizes (1/4″) can hold 75‑90 lbs. Capacity for concrete molly anchors in masonry is based on the base material - ask us for spec sheets.
Q: Can I use a molly bolt in concrete?
A: A standard hollow-wall molly anchor requires a hollow cavity behind the wall — it won’t work in solid concrete. But we do have concrete molly anchors (machine screw anchors) that expand into concrete, brick and hollow block. Those are great for masonry applications.
Q: Can a molly anchor be removed and reused?
A: Yes — that is one of the biggest advantages over plastic anchors. The metal sleeve stays in the wall. You can unscrew the machine screw, remove the mounted item, and later screw it back into the same anchor. The anchor itself remains intact.
Q: What is the difference between a single and a double nail clip?
A: Plastic molly bolts are light‑duty (15‑25 lbs), corrosion‑free, and cheaper. Metal molly anchors are medium‑heavy duty (50‑75+ lbs), reusable, and much stronger. For anything over 25 pounds, choose metal.
Q: Do I need to pre‑drill a hole for a molly anchor?
A: Yes — molly anchors require a pilot hole drilled to the correct diameter (usually 5/16″ to 1/2″). Do not hammer them in. Drill the hole, insert the sleeve flush with the wall, then tighten the screw.
Q: What is the strongest molly anchor for drywall?
A: A 1/4″ steel molly anchor with zinc plating offers the highest holding capacity in our range (75‑90 lbs). For even heavier loads, consider toggle bolts or multiple molly anchors spaced properly.
Q: Do Sinsun molly bolts come with screws included?
A: Yes. Every molly anchor kit includes the matching machine screw in the correct length and thread size. For bulk factory orders, we can customise screw length and head type to fit your specific fixture.
