You want the face frames and end panels to be strong, but you don't want the silver nail heads to be in your face all the time. Black brad nails blend in with dark cabinets. The thin 18-gauge shank also helps wood avoid splitting when nailing close to the edge of plywood or MDF.
Finish carpenters like these for one simple reason: they don't have to do as much putty work. A regular galvanized brad leaves a dark spot under the paint when it gets wet if you shoot into pre-primed MDF molding. Black brads don't show through the finish. There is less need for touch-ups because the line is cleaner.
